Russia Criticizes European MPs’ Resolution on Georgia
On October 21 the Russian Foreign Ministry criticized the resolution of the European Parliament on Georgia, claiming that the European parliamentarians have ?insufficient information? regarding the real situation in Georgia.
The European Parliament?s resolution on Georgia, adopted on October 14, calld on the EU Council and Commission ?to include the issue of Georgia?s territorial integrity in the agenda for the dialogues with Russia.?
The resolution also called for the EU’s increased support for ?the efforts to help resolve the conflicts in Georgia and the South Caucasus region, in cooperation with the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) and other actors.?
?The resolution reflects the concern within the circles of the European Union regarding the persistent tension in Georgia?s hot spots, including Abkhazia and South Ossetia. However, it is obvious that the European parliamentarians, unfortunately, have insufficient information regarding the real circumstances in Georgia,? reads the information note issued by the Russian Foreign Ministry on October 21.
?Russia supports the political settlement of the conflicts, which were cased by violation of rights of the peoples residing there [in Georgia] and the autonomy and national identity within the sovereign Georgian state. The Russian peacekeeping troops are the force which prevents a renewal of hostilities both in Abkhazia and in South Ossetia,? states the Russian Foreign Ministry.
