EUMM ‘Concerned’ over Gali Shooting Incident

The EU Monitoring Mission in Georgia (EUMM) expressed its “concern regarding a further violent act in Gali” in which two policemen and one civilian died.

Two unknown men, armed with Kalashnikov assault rifles, “opened random fire” in a café in the town of Gali, breakaway Abkhazia, killing two policemen and one local resident of the Gali district on May 28, Abkhaz news agency Apsnipress reported quoting prosecutor’s office.

EUMM said in a statement that it “stands ready to assist in anyway necessary”, including through sending a fact finding team on the ground.

“Such violent acts are unacceptable and can only destabilise the situation. The EUMM calls for restraint so that the local population in the Gali region can safely go about their daily lives,” EUMM said in the statement.
