Georgia’s Population 3.7 Million – Geostat

Georgia’s population stands at 3,723,500 as of January 2019,* a 0.2% decrease compared to the previous year, according to the figures released by the state statistics agency, Geostat, on April 30.

52% of the population is female and 48% – male, with 58.7% living in cities and 41.3% – in rural areas.

One third of the entire population is concentrated in the capital city Tbilisi (1.2 million), according to Geostat figures.

Population breakdown by regions is as follows: Imereti – 497,400; Kvemo Kartli – 433,200; Adjara – 349,000; Samegrelo-Zemo Svaneti – 316,200; Kakheti – 312,500; Shida Kartli – 257,300; Samtskhe-Javakheti – 154,100; Guria – 109,000; Mtskheta-Mtianeti – 93,600; Racha-Lechkhumi and Kvemo Svaneti – 29,700.

14.8% of the population is of age 65 and older. The share of persons aged from zero to 14 stands at 20.3% and the share of working age population (15-64 years old) equals 64.9%.

Georgia’s last  population census, held in 2014, registered the total number of population at 3.7 million. In the previous census, carried out in 2002, the population figure stood at 4.4 million, a million less than in the census held in 1989.

* The figures do not cover residents of Abkhazia and Tskhinvali regions.
