Ex-Interior Minister Okruashvili Sentenced over High-Profile Murder Case

Irakli Okruashvili, former Interior Minister and now the leader of political movement “Victorious Georgia,” who remains in custody in connection with a separate case, was sentenced to pretrial detention over the high-profile murder case of Amiran (Buta) Robakidze in 2004, today.

The Georgian Prosecutor’s Office announced on November 19 that it brought charges against Irakli Okruashvili and former Prosecutor General Zurab Adeishvili over exceeding official powers, involving imprisonment from three to eight years.

A preliminary court hearing is expected to be held on January 9, 2020.

Irakli Okruashvili was sent to pretrial custody in July 2019 on charges of “organizing, leading and participating” in mass violence during the unrests on the night of 20-21 June.
