Justice Minister Calls for Jury, Independent Prosecutors to Try Corruption Cases

A trial by jury and appointment of independent prosecutors is necessary to investigate high-profile corruption cases, Justice Minister Mikheil Saakashvili told independent TV station Rustavi 2 on Tuesday.

Saakashvili downplayed the possibility of achieving any results through existent system of law enforcement and called for “national movement” to uproot corruption.

The comments came after the heated government debates discussing Parliamentary Chairman Zhvania’s open letter to President Shevardnadze on a threat posed by corruption concluded with no decisive outcome late on Tuesday.

It is the first time that Saakashvili publicizes his vision of anti-corruption investigations. Justice Minister did not, however, clarify whether President Shevardnadze was supportive of his vision.
