Parliament Forgets the Desire it Had a Month Ago

The Resonance; The Akhali Taoba

(Georgian Press Digest. 26.11.01. Civil Georgia) – Parliament is approving ministerial candidates. The only candidate it refused to approve so far was Nino Chkhobadze, former minister of protection of environment an natural resources. “MPs start to forget how they supported people gathered in front of the Parliament building about a month ago insisting on total governmental change. The desire they had at that time is fading away and MPs start do obey the President’s orders again”, the Resonance says.

“Divide and rule!” – this is the belief Shevardnadze follows. Separated MPs are very advantageous for him”, the paper says and points out that the population starts to lose faith in the Parliament again.

MPs usually vote for a candidate on purpose. The block Revival says it will vote for the one the Citizens’ Union dislikes and it will not support the one the Citizens’ Union supports, MP Koba Davitashvili told the Resonance. “The Parliament cannot guess that the revolution is inevitable and it will not be peaceful one”, he said.

The Akhali Taoba partially shares ideas of the Resonance about ineffective work of the Parliament. It says no one in the legislative branch cares about the problems of the country. They mostly think about ministerial and parliament posts for themselves to take. “The Parliament grew into a market zone where political selling and purchasing is on”, the paper assumes.

The Akhali Taoba is positive that former head of the Parliament Zurab Zhvania is unable to control the Parliament any more. Improvement of old ministers in the new government is an evidence for that. According to the paper, new Parliamentary majority is formed, which will put Zhvania’s team in the opposition.
