(Tbilisi. November 29. Civil Georgia) – Russian Defense Minister Sergey Ivanov denied accusations that Russian combat helicopters bombed Georgia’s Pankisi gorge, Russian news agency Interfax reports.
“Helicopters do not fly at night, especially in difficult mountain conditions,” Ivanov told journalists in Moscow on November 29.
“We have obtained fresh proof that a serious fight occurred between Arab mercenaries and Chechen rebels over drug profits in the Pankisi gorge. An ammunition depot was blasted during that clash,” he said. Tbilisi officials deny the information.
The US state department and observers from OSCE, monitoring Georgian-Russian boarder in Georgia confirmed that the Russian helicopters violated the Georgian airspace and bombed Pankisi.
