Georgian-Russian Negotiations on Framework Agreement Started

(Tbilisi. December 21. Civil Georgia) – Negotiations on framework agreement between Georgia and Russia started in the Georgian Ministry of Foreign Affairs today. Russian Duma Council Committee Chairman on CIS Affairs Boris Pastukhov leads the Russian delegation.

Foreign Affairs Minister Irakli Menagarishvili, head of Georgian side, stated earlier that he is optimistic regarding the negotiations process.

The talks were to start in November but were delayed because of the governmental crisis in Georgia.

Presidents of Georgia and the Russian Federation signed a framework agreement about friendship, peaceful relationship and cooperation on November 3, 1994. Georgian Parliament ratified the document but Russian Duma Council failed to reciprocate.

Current talks are expected to offer a breakthrough in preparation of the new draft agreement.
