(Tbilisi, January 14, Civil Georgia) – Levan Berdzenishvili, Director of the National Library and respected civil activist, stated today that the government and President renew straggle against the draft “Law on Return of the Unjustified Property to the State”.
On January 14, at the news conference Levan Berdzenishvili, which is to co-chair the radical reformers New National Movement, states that the recent statements of the high governmental officials, including the President, confirm his assumptions.
President Shevardnadze denied radical reformers’ accusation that he hinders discussion of draft “Law on Return of the Unjustified Property to the State”, which would allow for confiscation of the property of public officials origins of which cannot be justified through their tax files.
The draft law was first presented last summer by then-Justice Minister Mikhail Saakashvili, which is leader of the New National Movement. Heated debates on the draft triggered Saakashvili’s resignation in September 2001.
