(Tbilisi, January 29, Civil Georgia) Citizens Union of Georgia (CUG) moved against the president-appointed governors demanding cutting of their budgets and responsibilities.
Secretary-General of CUG Edvard Surmanidze argued against inflated governor budgets as well as the political statements frequently made by the governors.
Interestingly, the post of the “President’s regional representative” is not foreseen by the Georgian legislation and was applied as an ad hoc measure.
Gia Baramidze, Chairman of the Parliaments’ Defense and Security committee mentioned that CUG may decide to support abolishing of the governors intstitute as such, as an obstacle to development of the regional self-government.
