Russia Welcomes UN Resolution on Georgian-Abkhazian Conflict

(Tbilisi, February 2, Civil Georgia) – “In Moscow hope is expressed that Georgian and Abkhaz sides will see UN Security Council’s resolution as an impulse to a more determined search for ways to achieve reconciliation of the conflict,” Russian Foreign Affairs Ministry’s spokesman Aleksandr Yakovenko stated on February 1.

The UN Security Council adopted resolution on “Basic Principles for the Distribution of Competences between Tbilisi and Sukhumi [capital of breakaway Republic of Abkhazia]” on January 31.

The document aims to facilitate UN-led negotiations between the parties on the status of Abkhazia within the State of Georgia

“We would like to point out the fact that work on the text of this important document took place in an atmosphere of mutual understanding and close interaction between members of the UN Security Council,” Yakovenko stated.
