(Tbilisi, March 26, Civil Georgia) – Russian peacekeepers and military observers from UN mission in Georgia [UNOMIG] resumed monitoring of Kodori gorge, the only territory in breakaway Abkhazia controlled by the Georgian government, on March 26.
Monitoring of the gorge was terminated last October, when armed clashes occurred in Abkhazia between combined Georgian-Chechen guerrillas and Abkhazian fighters.
Georgian Defense Ministry sent additional army units to the gorge during the clashes. Abkhazian side Russia and UN demands from Georgia withdrawal of army units from Kodori.
