Russia Ready to Let UN Observers in Gudauta Military Base

(Tbilisi, May 23, Civil Georgia) – Russian side is ready to allow UN observers in Gudauta military base [in breakaway Abkhazia], – Sergei Mironov, head of the upper chamber of Russian Parliament stated today at the news briefing held with Nino Burjanadze, Georgian Parliamentary Chairperson.

Russian Federation claims its troops and military equipment have already been withdrawn from the base but none of the international organizations have confirmed the fact since the withdrawal was not monitored. 

Burjanadze announced at the briefing that the Georgian side strictly demands that the mandate of Russian peacekeeper deployed in Georgian-Abkhazian conflict zone be modified otherwise Georgian government will refuse to prolong it.

According to Mironov, Russian side will do its best to take Georgia’s interests into consideration.

Mironov arrived in Georgia from Armenia and will leave for Azerbaijan afterwards.
