(Tbilisi, June 14, Civil Georgia) – On June 14 the upper chamber of the Russian Parliament – Federation Council will discuss the issue of prolongation of mandate of the Russian peacekeepers deployed in the Georgian-Abkhazian conflict zone under the auspices of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS).
It is anticipated that the mandate will be prolonged till June 30 as the heads of the CIS member states have agreed. The issue of the further presence of Russian peacekeepers in the conflict zone is not discussed at this time.
Georgia demands modifications in the peacekeepers’ mandate and their deployment deeper into the territory of breakaway Abkhazia.
