Opposition Unhappy After Meeting with President

(Tbilisi, Civil Georgia, July 26, 2002) – Leader of the opposition factions expressed dissatisfaction after the meeting with President Shevardnadze on July 26, where the issues of the Cabinet and the governors’ position were discussed.

Giorgi Baramidze, Chairman of the Democrats Parliamentary faction told the Civil Georgia “it was just an ordinary meeting without any results.” He said that Eduard Shevardnadze intends to veto in case the Parliament adopts draft on Cabinet, which will consider cutting power from the President.

President Shevardnadze offered the Parliamentary leadership to create a governmental commission, which will work on the issue of the Cabinet of Ministers. 

President also did not agree with the Parliamentarians demanding cancellation of the governors’ position. The governors of the regions are appointed directly by the President at the moment.
