Georgia Accuses Russia in Aggression

(Tbilisi, Civil Georgia, July 31, 2002) – On July 30 Georgian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) issued a statement concerning the violation of the Georgian airspace and bombing territories.

The fighter jets and helicopters entered the Georgian airspace from Russia and bombed unpopulated arrears in northern mountainous regions of Georgia on July 29-30.

“Acts like this should be regarded as an open aggression against the neighboring sovereign state. Georgian side believes that the recent violations of the airspace were possible because the previous cases are not investigated,” the MFA statement says.

These are not first cases of bombardment of the Georgian territory. Last year mountainous regions in the northeastern Georgia and Kodori gorge, breakaway Abkhazia were bombed for several times.

“This kind of aggressive acts coincided with the anti-Georgian campaign, which is launched in the Russia media, and which is absolutely ungrounded. This provocation is against the positive steps that was made recently in relationship between Georgia and Russia,” MFA statement says.
