US Congressmen Impressed with Georgia Dealing with Terrorism Challenges

(Tbilisi, Civil Georgia, August 3, 2002) – “I want to say on behalf of my colleagues that we are very impressed with what we’ve seen as Georgia faces the extraordinary challenge of dealing with the threat of international terrorism as well as rebuilding economy and establishing rule of law”, congressman David Dreier, chairman of House Committee of Rules stated today after meeting President Shevardnadze.

“United States strongly supports sovereignty and territorial integrity of Georgia and if challenge exists on those questions the United States supports the right of both Georgia and Russia to resolve those questions”, the congressman said.

While commenting on Pankisi gorge problem David Dreier pointed out that the United States “strongly supports the Georgian government and their request to bring about a resolution to the challenge that exists there”.

Delegation of US congressman arrived to Georgia on August 2. They have held meetings with Georgian Defense Minister, Parliamentary Chairperson and the President. Meeting with the Foreign Affairs Minister in planned later on today.
