(Tbilisi, Civil Georgia, August 12, 2002) – Today Central Elections’ Commission (CEC) started to recount votes cast during Tbilisi city council – Sakrebulo, elections on June 2. This is the second part of the recounting process.
During the first part of the process the CEC members inventoried all the documentation that were kept sealed at the CEC.
At the moment 5 groups of CEC members recount the ballots. Representatives of the NGOs and journalists as well observe the process of recounting.
It is hard to predict exactly how long the recounting of votes will take. The CEC members say it might take couple of months. According to the law, if more than 20% of the votes will be a subject to annulment due to various reasons, new elections shall be held in Tbilisi.
