Arrested Arab in 3-Month Preliminary Detention

(Tbilisi, September 2, 2002, Civil Georgia) – Georgia’s Supreme Court sentenced ethnic Arab Haled Omar, detained in Pankisi gorge, to a 3-month preliminary detention yesterday.

Haled Omar had a French passport during the arrest. Georgian law enforcers suppose that the passport may be false.

According to Georgian information agencies, the detained is not identified yet. He is accused of illegally crossing the Georgian border and being a member of international terrorist organizations. The law enforcers do not specify which terrorist organization the detained Arab may belong to.
