Georgian Public Defender in Strasburg on Chechens’ Extradition Case

(Tbilisi, November 19, Civil Georgia) – Georgian Public Defender Nana Devdariani visits European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) in Strasburg concerning the case of 11 Chechens, allegedly militants detained in Georgia.

Georgia has already extradited 5 Chechens to Russia out of 13. Russia wants the hand over of remaining 8 detainees. The ECHR urged the Georgian authorities to suspend extradition till Court discusses the case. Discussion is scheduled for November 24.

Georgian Public Defender intends to submit to the court the evidences proving that the extradition of the 5 Chechens was illegal.

Recently Georgian General Prosecutor’s Office announced that 2 out of 8 detainees, which are in preliminary detention in Tbilisi, are Georgian citizens, thus they will not be handed over to Russia.

Georgian border guards captured 13 armed men near the Russian border in early August. Georgian State Security Ministry charged them for illegal crossing the border and carrying arms and explosives.
