Railway Route Between Russia and Breakaway Abkhazia Restored

(Tbilisi, December 26, 2002. Civil Georgia) – On December 25 the first train in past ten years crossed the border between Russia and Georgia’s breakaway region of Abkhazia.

Georgian MPs expressed protest today regarding the restoration of the railway route between Russia and separatist region.

“Restoration of the railway, together with granting Russian citizenship to the population of breakaway region can be regarded as an open aggression against Georgia,” MP Givi Lominadze of Abkhazia faction stated at the Parliamentary session today.

“Restoration of the railway route is the violation of the CIS agreements [on blockade of breakaway Abkhazia],” Nino Burjanadze, Parliamentary Chairperson said.
