Ex-State Minister May Join the New Rights

(Tbilisi, January 15, 2003. Civil Georgia) – Former State Minister, MP Niko Lekishvili says he shares the opposition New Rights Party’s ideology and the members of the party are his friends.

In the interview to the Georgian daily “24 Saati” MP Niko Lekishvili commented on rumors concerning his possible joining the opposition New Rights Party.

“I will make an important announcement concerning the issue at the special briefing,” Lekishvili said.

Niko Lekishvili’s intention to join the opposition would re-enforce the position of the New Rights opposition party, moving it closer to the centrist forces. Lekishvili was a close associate of President Shevardnadze for many years.

In 1995-98 he held the post of the State Minister. In 1993-95 he was mayor of capital city Tbilisi.
