Radioactive Source Found in Eastern Georgia

The Radiation Safety Service of the Ministry of the Environment revealed radioactive source Cesium-137 in a village of Saakadze of the Gardabani district, eastern Georgia.

Leri Meskhi, the head of the Georgian Radiation Safety Service, told Civil Georgia that it is unknown yet how the radioactive source appeared in the village. “We are investigating the case at the moment,” he added.

In August Georgian government signed an agreement with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to assist Georgia in detecting radioactive sources in the country by installing special equipment at customs check-points.
