Zhvania Calls for Long-Term Opposition Coalition

(Tbilisi, January 23, 2003. Civil Georgia) – Leader of the United Democrats Party, former Parliamentary Chairman Zurab Zhvania told Civil Georgia today, “the coalition of the opposition parties should be long-termed and not only for the Parliamentary election period”.

Leader of the New Nationalists Mikheil Saakashvili proposed on January 21 to create a broad opposition alliance for the upcoming elections. He said the proposal is a joint initiative with the United Democrats party.

“The coalition should be based on the certain principles. I think these should be liberal democratic principles, carrying out democratic reforms in the country, integration to the western structures. The principles will be drafted during the consultation between the opposition parties,” Zhvania told Civil Georgia.
