Riot at Prison Injures Three Law Enforcers

(Tbilisi, January 25, 2003. Civil Georgia) – Officials say three law enforcers injured as a result of the clash with the prisoners of the Tbilisi preliminary detention center on January 25.

The clashes occurred after the special forces of the Justice Ministry started to carry out search in the detention center, which caused protest of the detainees. Authorities do not report the number injuried among the prisoners.

The law enforcers could restore the order in the preliminary detention center only after the additional forces of the Interior Ministry were involved in the operation.

Paata Mkheidze, chief of the penitentiary system said at the news briefing today that two Kalashnikov assault rifles were found in the preliminary detention center as a result of search.
