Foreign Minister Reports MPs on CIS Summit

(Tbilisi, January 30, 2003. Civil Georgia) – Georgian Foreign Minister Irakli Menagharishvili reports today to the Parliament concerning the results of the informal summit of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) in Ukraine.

According to the Georgian Foreign Minister Russian President Putin said during the meeting with President Shevardnadze in Kiev that he was not informed concerning the reopening of the railway link between Russia and breakaway Abkhazia, as well as concerning the issue of Russian passports to the population in Abkhazia.

Irakli Menagharishvili said that the two Presidents agreed to create a joint commission which will work to solve these problems, as well as the issue of Russian peacekeepers deployed in the conflict zone under the auspices of the CIS.

Georgian President refused to prolong Russian peacekeepers mandate till these problems are not solved.
