(Tbilisi February 3, 2003. Civil Georgia) – US company AES-Telasi, which distributes electricity in capital city Tbilisi, refused statement of President Shevardnadze that the company has financial problems and might leave the country.
“President’s statement made today is absolutely incomprehensible for the company’s leadership. The AES-Telasi has no financial problems at the moment,” Irakli Melashvili, AES-Telasi lobbyist told Civil Georgia today. Melashvili said that the company does not indent to leave Georgia.
This is the second time when the President says that the AES has financial problems and will leave Georgia. Last December President stated that the company “became a burden for the country.”
The US company AES rented the Tbilisi electric power distribution system for 99 years in 1999. AES also controls the power facilities in Gardabani, where the company AES-Mtkvari was created.
