(Tbilisi. March 5, 2003. Civil Georgia) – UN Secretary General?s representative in Georgia Heidi Tagliavini informed today Parliamentary Special Commission on Abkhazia regarding the recent developments in settlement of the conflict in Abkhazia.
UN envoy briefed the MPs concerning the meeting of the UN Secretary General’s Group of Friends on Georgia (Germany, France, Great Britain, Russia and the United States) held in Geneva on February 19-20 to discuss situation in Abkhazian conflict zone.
Heidi Tagliavini said that during the meeting creation of three commissions was agreed. The first one will work on the issue of safe return of the IDPs in Abkhazia, the second ? on rehabilitation of the region?s economy and the third commission on political and security issues.
UN Secretary General?s representative said that she visited Abkhazia on March 3 and briefed the Abkhaz de facto authorities regarding this decision, but so far there is no response from the Abkhaz side.
Heidi Tagliavini stated that in June the UN Secretary General’s Group of Friends on Georgia will hold the meeting to monitor the implementation of the decisions taken during the meeting in Geneva.
