CoE Calls Georgia to Speed up Election System Reform

(Tbilisi, June 4 2003, Civil Georgia) – The delegation of the Council of Europe, which pays fact-finding visit to Georgia to assess the state of Georgia’s honoring of the commitments of the CoE, told the reporters today that the Georgian authorities as well as the opposition should speed up reform of the election system.

Member of the delegation Matyas Eorsi said at the news briefing in Tbilisi that the he hails some progress that is made to improve the election code, but added that the unsolved problem of the election administration is the obstacle for the conduction of the fair and democratic elections.

During this visit to Georgian the CoE delegation focused on the pre-election situation in the country.

The delegation will deliver report to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe about Georgian in September.
