Shevardnadze Criticizes IMF

(Tbilisi, June 25, 2003, Civil Georgia) – Georgian President Eduard Shevardnadze commented harshly on possible suspension of IMF’s programs in Georgia, claiming the fund has no real ground for it.

“I can not understand what these threats from IMF that it would suspend cooperation with us, mean,” President Shevardnadze said at a government’s meeting on June 25.

Shevardnadze said, he would raise this issue at the session of the UN General Assembly in September.

The IMF Mission, which arrived in Georgia on June 24 to assess the fulfillment of the fund’s recommendations by the Georgian government, is holding meetings in the Finance Ministry today.
