(Tbilisi, June 27, 2003, Civil Georgia) – According to the preliminary estimations USD 40 million will be needed to restore railway connection between Russia and Georgia via breakaway Abkhazia.
On June 26 Deputy Transport Ministers of the two countries discussed technical issues of the restoration of the railway.
It is unknown so far, which side will fund the project; however, the sides went for joint funding, as well as attracting foreign investors and donors.
The talks in Tbilisi were held in the framework of the March 7 Sochi agreement between President Shevardnadze and Putin, which envisaged to set up working groups on displaced person’s return in Abkhazia, restoration of the railway link and rehabilitation of the power facilities in the breakaway region.
The Russian delegation intends to hold talks on restoration of the railway connection with the Abkhaz side as well in the nearest future.
