OSCE Assists Georgian Border Guards

(Tbilisi, June 28, 2003, Civil Georgia) – The OSCE Mission to Georgia handed over to the Georgian border guards, patrolling in the high mountainous areas along the Chechen, Ingush and Dagestan segments of the Georgian-Russian border, equipment.

The equipment includes personal items, boots, communication and rescue equipment, binoculars and other items, purchased with a 100,000 Euros grant from the European Union.

Units of the Department of the Georgian Border Guard Department are assigned to the OSCE Border Monitoring Operation and accompany unarmed OSCE observers, while monitoring the Chechen, Ingush and Dagestan sections of the Georgian-Russian border.

The OSCE Border Monitoring Operation began in December 1999. The Ingush and the Dagestan segments of the Georgian-Russian border were added to the mandate in December 2001 and January 2003, respectively.
