(Tbilisi, July 12, 2003, Civil Georgia) – On July 12 Secretary of the National Security Council of Georgia Tedo Japaridze met with the members of the Veteran Warriors’ Union of Abkhazia, who continue hungerstrike in front of the building of the Tbilisi-based Abkhaz government-in-exile.
The hungerstrikers demand withdrawal of the Russian peacekeeping troops from the Abkhazian conflict zone.
“We should bring our requirements to the relevant international organizations. As a UN member state we will urge the UN to enforce Chapter VII of the UN Charter for peace enforcement in Abkhazia,” Tedo Japaridze said.
Despite the support by the Security Council Secretary, the hunger strikers did not cease the action, declaring that it will continue until Georgian President Eduard Shevardnadze signs the document on withdrawal of Russian peacekeeping troops.
