Presidential-backed Election Alliance Wants to Restrain State Minister’s Power

(Tbilisi, July 15, 2003, Civil Georgia) – At the meeting of the pro-Presidential election alliance For New Georgia, leaders of the alliance proposed President Shevardnadze to create a political council, which would be a main governance body of the alliance.

The move is seen as a step towards restraining the State Minister Avtandil Jorbenadze’s power in the alliance, who is the chief of the election HQ of the alliance.

In case of creation of the political council Jorbenadze will not be able to take unilateral decisions, as the political council will be responsible for the election alliance’s policy.

After the meeting of the leaders of the alliance Vano Zodelava, Mayor of capital city Tbilisi told the reporters that the decision-making process will be carried out by the members of the political council.

The leaders of the political parties and movements, united in the election alliance will be represented in the political council.
