Georgian President, EU Envoy Pledge for Closer Ties

(Tbilisi, July 31, 2003, Civil Georgia) – During the meeting with the European Union’s  Special Representative for the South Caucasus Heikki Talvitie on July 30, President Shevardnadze stressed Georgia’s interest in closer ties with the EU.

According to the Georgian State Chancellery, Eduard Shevardnadze said that the country does its best to harmonize its legislation with the EU’s laws.

“From now on our relations will become more fruitful,” Heikki Talvitie said during the meeting with Georgian President.

The EU Special Representative reitera!
ted the EU support for settlement of conflicts in breakaway Abkhazia and South Ossetia.

Before his second visit to Georgia scheduled for October, Heikki Talvitie will report the EU leadership in Brussels about the situation in Georgia.
