Parliament Again Rejects Baker’s Plan

(Tbilisi, August 5, 2003, Civil Georgia) – The Parliament rejected today rule of composition of the Central Election Commission, based on US-suggested election guidelines today, as the pro-Presidential factions, as well as Revival and Industrialists factions voted against.

On July 31 the Parliament rejected the proposal; however the opposition factions the United Democrats, New Rights, National Movement and Traditionalists resubmitted the proposal to the Parliament for reconsideration.

4 that the delay in adoption of the amendments, which include broad anti-fraud measures and the creation of a credible election administration, hinders efforts to ensure that the 2 November Parliamentary election takes place according to OSCE commitments.
