Shevardnadze, Burjanadze Confront Publicly

(Tbilisi, August 6, 2003, Civil Georgia) – Controversy erupted between Parliamentary Chairperson Nino Burjanadze and President Shevardnadze at a government session on August 6, after Burjanadze urged the President to submit detailed information about the deal between US company AES and Russian energy giant Unified Energy System (UES).

“I wonder what kind of agreement was concluded between the US and Russian companies and whether it will not trigger any negative conseque!
nces for the country,” Burjanadze said while attending the government session at her own desire.

“Give us time. Don’t try to be ahead of the government. We do not know exactly what is happening. We shall inform you about everything when the things become clear. If the terms of the agreement are not acceptable for you, you can demand the government’s resignation,” President Shevardnadze interrupted Burjanadze.

He said everything would become clear as soon as the Chief of UES Anatoly Chubais arrives in Tbilisi today.

The US company AES and the Russian UES concluded an agreement on the sale of the AES assets in Georgia.
