Secret Agreement Prohibited AES Selling of the Georgian Assets to the Neighboring Country

(Tbilisi, August 9, 2003, Civil Georgia) – Former Minister for the State Property Management Mikheil Ukleba said today that a confidential agreement between the US company AES and the Georgian authorities disallowed sales of the US company shares in the Georgian energy sector to the neighboring countries.

In 1999 Ukleba was among those Georgian officials to sign an agreement with the AES, according to which the US company purchased 75% of shares in Tbilisi el!
ectricity distribution company.

“The secret agreement really exists and the AES had no right to sell its assets in Georgia to our neighboring country,” Mikheil Ukleba said at the meeting of the special Parliamentary commission, which investigates the reasons of the energy crisis in Georgia.
