Shevardnadze Wants Compromise Over CEC Chairman

(Tbilisi, August 29, 2003, Civil Georgia) – President Shevardnadze supports the appointment of Rusudan Beridze, Deputy Secretary of the National Security Council to the post of Chairperson of the Central Election Commission (CEC).

?I support Beridze, however as far as I know, the opposition is against her, because she is considered to be a pro-governmental person. I do not want to make a decision that will cause a confrontation with the opposition parties,? said Shevardnadze on August 29 while commenting on the shortlist of candidates for the CEC Chairman.

n was added to the 25-member list of candidates for CEC Chairman? MP Vakhtang Khmaladze, who was actively engaged in the development of the new election code.

The representatives from the Council of Europe and the OSCE, who have to submit the shortlist of candidates to the President for approval, met with representatives from Georgian civil organizations.

Some NGOs expressed support for Vakhtang Khmaladze?s candidacy.
