(Tbilisi, September 4, 2003, Civil Georgia) – Interior Minister Koba Narchemashvili told reporters on September 3 that reports on the grave crime situation in the north-western mountainous region of Svaneti are exaggerated.
The National Security Council decided on August 22 to carry out an anti-crime operation in Svaneti. Later President Shevardnadze appealed to the region’s population to support the operation.
“We do not need a large scale operation. The situation in Svaneti is the same as other regions of Georgia and do not exaggerate,” Koba Narchemashvili told !
