Russian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Alexander Yakovenko hailed the talks between the Georgian and South Ossetian sides over restoration of trust between the conflicting sides.
The talks were held in the Hague under the auspices of the OSCE’s Netherlands Chairmanship on October 14-17. However, the sides failed to reach any agreement over settlement of the conflict.
“We are not inclined to dramatize this fact – even a negative result is a useful lesson for all the participants of the negotiating process. The Hague meeting confirmed once again that if there is no trust between the sides, there will be no progress in the negotiations,” Yakovenko told reporters on October 21.
As the Russian news agency RIA Novosti reports quoting the Foreign Ministry Spokesman, “Russia is ready to do its best to help the conflicting sides achieve progress in overcoming the consequences of the 1989-1992 conflict”.
However, he added, the sides should try to overcome mutual mistrust and prevent further confrontation in the conflict zone.
