Computerization of Voter Lists Stopped

The Central Election Commission and the political parties agreed today to reject the computerization of the voter lists and rely fully on the hardcopies of the lists.

The national data center, where all the data entry process of the voter lists was carried out, ceased functioning. The International Foundation for Election Systems (IFES) provided technical assistance to the Georgian government to computerize the voter lists.

The mass inaccuracies in the lists triggered mutual accusations among the political parties and the governmental structures. The Interior Ministry, which prepared initial voters’ data, claims that it has provided the old CEC, which was under the control of the pro-governmental parties, with the exact voter lists. Thus the Interior Ministry denies any responsibility for inaccuracies, pointing the finger at the old CEC.

The presidential-backed election bloc For New Georgia claims that the main part of inaccuracies occurred in the lists during the computerization, while the opposition parties, as well as the group of experts, which tried to investigate the reasons of mess in the lists, accuse the Interior Ministry.
