Resignation of Tbilisi University Rector Caused Controversy

One part of students and their lecturers are rallying in front of the Tbilisi State University, protesting against the youth movement Kmara (Enough) under the pressure of which rector of the Tbilisi State University Roin Metreveli filed resignation on November 26. Metreveli?s opponents accuse former rector of corruption.

Supporters of Roin Metreveli call the authorities for non-interference in the Tbilisi University?s internal affairs.

Interim President Nino Burjanadze met protesters late on November 26 and said that the university is ?an autonomous structure and authorities have no right to interfere in the university?s affairs.? It is anticipated that Nino Burjanadze will meet the protesters again on November 27.

However one part of students keeps protesting outside the university building in downtown Tbilisi demanding Metreveli?s return on the post of Tbilisi University?s rector.

This part of students claims that Kmara movement is closely linked with the current leadership of the country, which came to power after the velvet revolution.

Several politicians, who were supporting Shevardnadze during the political crisis, including Zakaria Kutsnashvili of the Socialists Party, appeared on the protest rally.
