Russian Held Talks with Leaders of Georgia’s Breakaway Regions

Russian Foreign Minister Igor Ivanov met today with Abkhaz de facto Prime Minister Raul Khajimba in Moscow, following the talks with leader of Georgia’s another breakaway region South Ossetia Eduard Kokoev.

“Our position towards the political status of Abkhazia remains unchanged. Abkhazia is an independent republic, and we will never join Georgia,” Raul Khajimba said at a news briefing on November 29 after meeting with the Russian Foreign Minister.

Earlier Russian Foreign Minister held talks with Aslan Abashidze, head of Adjara Autonomous Republic, which announced that he cuts ties with the new leadership of Georgia, but ruled out secession.

Aslan Abashidze also met with Raul Khajimba and Eduard Kokoev in Moscow.

Georgia’s new leadership, which took over the power after the velvet revolution, expressed readiness to hold talks with Aslan Abashidze to defuse tensions.

De facto President of South Ossetia said earlier that talks in Moscow between Abkhaz, South Ossetian and Adjarian leaders “should not be perceived as a conspiracy against Georgia.”
