Sukhumi Denies Fugitive ex-Security Chief is in Abkhazia

Authorities of the breakaway Abkhazia denied reports of the Georgian media that Igor Giorgadze, ex-Minister of Security, who is wanted for bomb attack against Shevardnadze in 1995, arrived in Abkhaz capital Sukhumi.

?Igor Giorgadze has no reason to arrive in Abkhazia; nobody is waiting for him here. Those, who have reported this news, aim at discrediting the Abkhaz side,? Maksim Gindjia, the head of the International Department of breakaway Abkhazia?s Foreign Ministry, told Civil Georgia on December 1.

The wife of Igor Giorgadze submitted an application on behalf of Igor Giorgadze to the Central Election Commission for registration of Giorgadze as a candidate for the presidential elections, scheduled for January.

The Central Election Commission annulled Giorgadze’s registration to run for the November 2 parliamentary elections in a single-mandate constituency on the grounds that he has not lived in Georgia for past two years, as required by the law.
