Interim President Nino Burjanadze intends to set a date for repeat parliamentary elections. It is anticipated that the elections will be held for early March.
The OSCE has already recommended Georgia’s authorities not to hold parliamentary elections before March.
Presidential candidate Mikheil Saakashvili, who according to the exit polls received more than 85% of votes in Sunday’s snap presidential elections, said on January 4 that the date of parliamentary elections should be set as soon as possible.
He also said that his party the National Movement and the party of Nino Burjanadze and Zurab Zhvania, the State Minister – the Burjanadze-Democrats will form a bloc and run for parliamentary elections. Nino Burjanadze would lead the new election bloc.
“This will be a long-term cooperation [with Burjanadze and Zhvania],” Saakashvili said at a news briefing just after the announcement of the exit poll results.
