Lawsuit Filed against State of Emergency in Adjara

Tamaz Diasamidze, who is one of the founders of the public movement Our Adjara, the organization aiming at protection of civil rights in the Autonomous Republic, appealed the Georgian Constitutional Court claiming that enforcement of the state of emergency in Adjara is illegal.

Tamaz Diasamidze claims that Adjarian leader Aslan Abashidze had no constitutional right to enforce state of emergency, which violates civil rights of the Adjarian population.

The Constitutional Court will examine admissibility in the case on January 14. The Court expects to receive the decree of the Adjara Autonomous Republic over announcement of the state of emergency in the region by that time.

The state of emergency was canceled in Adjara on January 3 in order to hold the presidential elections; however, on January 7 Adjarian leader Aslan Abashidze announced that the state of emergency was renewed in the region to prevent destabilization in the Autonomous Republic.
