Council of Europe Secretary General Walter Schwimmer expressed hope that the new President of Georgia will do his best to improve governance in Georgia and meet the CoE standards.
“In Georgia, the Presidential elections at the beginning of this month [January 4] marked the beginning of a change. The Council of Europe, and in particular the Parliamentary Assembly’s assistance, was instrumental in this regard. We expect that the new leader in Georgia will ensure improvements in the governance, in full compliance with Council of Europe standards,” Walter Schwimmer said at the Parliamentary Assembly session on January 27.
New President of Georgia Mikheil Saakashvili, who left for Strasbourg today, is also expected to make a speech at the Parliamentary Assembly. The situation in Georgia will be discussed by the CoE parliamentarians.
