Guerrilla Group Surrenders Arms

Georgian guerrilla group Forest Brothers, led by Davit Shengelia surrendered arms on February 11 in the wake of police crackdown on armed groups in the frontline town of Zugdidi at the Abkhazian conflict zone.

“During the [police] operation [on February 4 in Zugdidi] I agreed with Giorgi Baramidze [the Interior Minister] that we would give up arms. We transported ammunition and weapons from the territories controlled by the Abkhaz separatists and handed them over to police,” Davit Shengelia told Rustavi 2 television.

Up to 30 guerillas and criminals were detained by the police on February 4 in Zugdidi district. The Interior Minister said that the criminals charged with kidnapping, smuggling and other crimes that were committed under the pretext of guerrilla operations in breakaway Abkhazia.
