Tbilisi Cuts Rail, Air Link to Adjara

Georgian Interior Minister Giorgi Baramidze told reporters today that both air and railway traffic in the direction of Adjara has been suspended.

“We have suspended the traffic movement in the direction of Adjara Autonomous Republic. Now, we have to estimate all the problems Georgia faces due to irresponsible actions of Adjarian leader Aslan Abashidze. His supporters should duly realize what the consequences may be,” the Georgian Interior Minister said on March 15 while speaking with the reporters in Poti.

Mikheil Saakashvili said earlier on March 14 that the central authorities intend to close borders with its defiant region, “in order to cut financial sources for the [Adjarian] regime.”

Saakashvili also  gave time till late March 15 for the Adjarian leader Aslan Abashidze to fulfill the demands of the central authorities and allow the Georgian government and president to enter Adjara.
